Luke Davies (Kimberley Dynamiters), Grady Sterling-Ponech (Princeton Posse) and Andrew Krakora (Merritt Centennials) have been selected as the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League 3 Stars of the Week for the period ending Oct. 20/24.
Davies – Top Forward – The rookie from Calgary helped the Dynamiters win all three of their games by registering two goals and four assists. In their 5-2 victory over the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, Davies had three points and assisted on Nolan Kelly’s winning goal. Against the Fernie Ghostriders, in their 3-2 win, he assisted on their 2-1 goal; and in their 4-3 win over the Kamloops Storm, the 6-0, 190-pound forward collected two assists, including on the winning goal. In nine games, Davies has seven goals and seven assists, which ranks him third among all KIJHL rookies in points, while his 1.56 points per game average ranks him No.1.
Sterling-Ponech – Top Defenceman – The Lethbridge, Alta. product helped the Posse win two of their three games last week by registering a goal and four assists. The 5-11, 180-pound defenceman collected two assists in their 4-3 win over the Columbia Valley Rockies – Sterling-Ponech assisted on the 3-3 goal. In their 9-3 win over the Quesnel River Rush, he registered a goal and two assists, including on the winner. Sterling-Ponech has a goal and 10 assists on the season, and is four points shy of equaling his career high of 15 points from his rookie season.
Krakora – Top Goalie – The Pittsburgh, Pa., product helped the Centennials win both their games on the weekend by posting back-to-back shutouts. The 6-0, 185-pound goalie stopped all 24 shots the Golden Rockets fired at him in an 8-0 victory. Nearly half his saves, 11, came in the first period. Against the Chase Heat, Krakora had a 25-save performance and again, stopped 11 first-period shots. Krakora has five wins in eight games with a 2.23 goals against average and a .927 save rate. He leads the KIJHL in shutouts.
